Max + Zac · Utah

For once, we didn’t sit on it.

The two Redband Fishing founders standing in a Utah river

On Memorial Day weekend, 2025, Zac and Max were on a float trip on a stretch of river they love, and they were struggling. Streamers, dry flies — nothing was working. Nymphing with indicators is their least favorite way to fish, so they only turn to it as a last resort, but by that afternoon, they did. Sow Bugs turned out to be the ticket that day.

Zac hooked into a couple of big rainbows first and told Max to tie one on. Only problem: Max had to dig through several fly boxes just to find a single Sow Bug. He finally found one, tied it on, and within a few casts landed a big rainbow. A couple casts later, he hooked another — and lost it, fly and all.

By then it was almost sunset. They’d finally figured out the pattern, and Max needed another Sow Bug. He spent close to 20 minutes digging through five or six fly boxes trying to find one. When he finally found it, he dropped it in the water while putting his gear away. He searched for it until it got too dark to see. Thirty minutes, gone, along with the fly — right when the fishing had finally turned on.

That night, sitting at the fireplace talking about the day, the idea came up: what if there were a fly box with magnets that actually worked — not just a traditional mag pad, but something built to hold your flies securely and get you to the right one fast? Zac and Max had always talked about building something of their own — neither of them loved the idea of a corporate desk job for the rest of their lives — and once this idea came together, they knew they had to go all in on it.

That was Memorial Day weekend, 2025. Since then, Zac and Max have committed to posting content five times a week, found a designer they trust, found a factory, and gone through round after round of prototypes and testing. This is where that idea ended up. This is the box they wished they’d had that night on the river. Now they get to share it with you.

Redband isn’t a brand built in a boardroom. It’s two guys who fish.
